Bryan Ochoa, Spirit Publicity Coordinator 2020-2021
The Initial Letter
Going forward into the coming school year I was experiencing a lot of mixed emotions. Ignoring Covid, I was excited for the school year. Excited for another year of fun and doing things that can put a smile on peoples faces. I expected a year of excitement, and considering it was my junior year I was expecting a year of stress too. However, this year is different than usual, so instead of the usual excitement I was scared and nervous for the coming year. Covid changed everything and put most expectations to rest. I was scared for how my life would be affected because I couldn’t be at school. Scared for how my grades would be affected, scared for upcoming sports, and scared for all things leadership. I was scared but that’s just it, I was scared. Right now I’m not scared but looking forward to the year even if I only for a bit. My grades so far have been good, and concerning Leadership we’re doing things differently but we’re getting through it. The training with Scott uplifted my spirit and made me think that this year, though it may be different we can still do something. Out of this program I expect to learn and grow and but also help others. The best and probably nicest word to describe me would be eccentric and with that eccentricity I want to put a smile on people's faces. I want to become a better person while not losing who I am and my eccentric personality. This year is going to be very different, but me being who I am I’ll make it fun, and while doing so I can learn and grow further as a person.

“I am not your protagonist
I'm not even my own
I don't know anything
I don't even know what I don't know” - Sweet Hibiscus Tea song by Penelope Scott
I am a point in my life where I am unsure. But to be unsure is perfectly fine. I’m not the main character in people's lives but that's perfectly fine. I understand that fact and I won't dwell on that fact. Can I even say I’m my own main character? I don't know everything and I in fact don't know the things I don't know. Life is full of the unknown and I am at peace with that. To say that this is just one of my own tranquility is an understatement. Life is life and there is no greater definition for it and I live like that. I’m not a protagonist, I’m not even my own. I don’t know anything, and I don’t know what I don’t know.
“I think we could do it if we tried
If only to say, you’re mine
Sofia, know that you and I
Shouldn’t feel like a crime” - Sofia song by Clairo
I would like to say first that the song is written by a girl about a girl. I identify as a person that likes men and I’m at peace with that; just one of the things that adds to my own definition of tranquility. However that shouldn’t feel like a crime. Public display of affection should not feel like a crime because of the way same sex relationships have been stigmatized. Personally I like this quote because it gives the feeling of safety in a same sex relationship. If we tried, we could get through this feeling of “being a crime” and that just resonates with me.
“Know you got your own sh*t, and all of it together
And you know you got your own space, right here forever” - Ginger song by Brockhampton
In life sometimes it feels that we have everything together and everything’s fine. Sometimes you need that support system in case you fall through. That can be anything, even a person. This quote is one of my favorites because I know that stuff can fall apart when you least expect. However there’s people there that will help you in ways you couldn’t imagine. The care they show is wonderful. I will always try to be that support system for others my age because I know that life has its ups and downs, but despite it all we are still here. Everyone has their own sh*t but sometimes they just need to know they have someone to come back to.

Quotes Part 2 - Page 3
¿Quién dijo que no? (¿Quién dijo que no?)
Ey, que no puedo
Yo hago lo que me dé la gana (ey, ey, ey, ey)
El mundo es mío
This song is El Mundo Es Mio by Bad Bunny and the translation it means “Who said I can’t, I do what I want, The World is mine.” I think this song doesn't necessarily portray the effort I put into leadership but more so my personality in Leadership. There wasn’t much effort on my part to my specific job because of Covid-19. However as a leader this quote means that you should always grab life by its horns and manage it they way you want to. Future students also need to know that they are the ones in control of their life, nobody else. No matter what other people say, the world is yours. The quote is important because it invokes confidence and can inspire others. To do what you want should always be something to strive for. Reflection is important because you must always learn and grow. Growing as a person is important and you must always reflect on yourself. A simple statement can lead to discovery. That discovery and impact your future in ways you couldn’t possibly imagine. The world is yours

Goals Part 1 - Page 4
My first goal for Leadership is to win Fall Fest. This is a time where everyone is scared for the future. School is crazy and the entire world is crazy. A worldwide pandemic is happening. Despite all that I want to show to the junior class that stuff can still be fine. If we win then that can show the students that “Hey maybe online events won’t be that bad.” I want the students to be a bit more comfortable. That and I just want to win and not lose to the Seniors.
My second goal for Leadership is to help out where I can. I know that it is a general statement but because of COVID-19 people are stressed and worried and I want to help them. My job can’t really do much at the moment because Pride Tribe was absorbed into SuperFan and most of my job was in person, but despite that I want to help the people that still have something to do.
My third goal, but first short term goal for life, is to make go through college with a 4.0+ GPA. I always aspired to have good grades and will continue to do so even after highschool. Now in life that would just mean working hard on the job. College will be a high aspect of my life and a time where I will learn and grow more.
My fourth goal, but second short term goal for life, is to learn how to cook. Cooking can save so much more money than always buying out to eat and I can start to have a more balanced diet if I prep my own meals. That and I’m always hungry and want to eat so I might as well learn how to cook some delicious food for myself. Cooking might be beneficial in the future; Who knows?
My fifth goal, but first king term goal for life, is to be financially free. To be able to have enough money to not worry about food on the table or bills to pay, and to have enough money to spend a bit more on wants. In life money is a problem for just about anyone but I want to be able to be financially free so I can be one of those people that don’t have to worry about money. I know how it feels to worry about money and in the future I will not worry about money.
My last goal, but long term goal for life is to have a family. This goal is still being contemplated further. I don’t know if it would be right for me as a person to have a family especially considering my personality. In the future I might grow and learn more but that still can’t help that worry I have. In the back of my head I think I want a family and that’s enough for me. I’ll most likely adopt older children so they can understand that there are still people who care about them. They’re still kids and sometimes they need to be doted upon.

Goals Part 2 - Page 5
My first goal was a failure. Juniors got second place in Fall Fest. However more and more people became comfortable with the state of things, at least school wise. And it's also worth noting that we put on a Homecoming and the Juniors tied for first place. I did accomplish my goal of giving some hope to the junior class, which is something everyone needs during such difficult times.
My second goal was accomplished. I did help out where I could while on distance learning. Whether it was with homecoming or being a part of a committee during coronation it was enjoyable to do something leadership. I also helped others with their mental state because I understand that things can be hectic.
My third goal but first short time goal is to go through college 4.0+. This goal has not changed because I plan on accomplishing it. I currently have a 4.0+ and plan on maintaining that gpa. I have always been book smart and I will continue to be a book smart. I plan on attending Columbia University and have one of the highest gpas. I look forward to college and the personal growth that I will experience.
My fourth goal but second short time goal was to learn how to cook. I have made little to no progress in cooking but I do know how to make basic dishes. I also know how to cook mexican food because it was what I’ve always eaten. Cooking can save me an incredible amount of money contrary to buying out to eat all the time. I do want to have a balanced diet in the future when I am older. I’m always hungry and should learn how to cook so I can eat whenever I want to.
My fifth goal but first long time goal is to be financially free. In a capitalist society money drives everything and I wish to be able to have enough money without worrying about what it Is I’ll be eating or whether I'll be eating. I have learned how to budget and manage money better. Money is a problem for a lot of people and I don't plan on having it become a problem for me.
My sixth goal but second long time goal is to have a family. I’m still deciding on this goal because having a family is a big decision. If I do have a family I plan on adopting older children and care for them with my utmost being. They are still children deserving of love. It's definitely a decision for the future because I don’t know what's to come.

Bryan Ochoa is the Spirit Publicity Coordinator this year at Ripon High. This year he is a junior and had his share of honors and AP classes. Bryan Ochoa is 16 years old and both gay and mexican. Both his sexuality and his ethnicity have helped shape his life and his perspective on life. He is proud of his identity and who he is. To be Gay and Proud and to be Mexican and Proud. Bryan struggled with his sexuality for a period of time but he has learned to embrace who he is and who he loves. His sexuality should not feel like a crime and he learned that despite what people think if he wants to hold his significant other’s hand in public he will. Bryan also learned to embrace his culture of being a mexican and to not be embarrassed of his culture. If he wants to favorite spanish song he will. He is more than stereotypes and wants to show people that. Bryan is a unique individual and the word he uses to describe himself would be “eccentric.” If asked what goes on his head he’d respond with, “Who even knows.” Most people know him as this positive person and Bryan is proud of that. “If I’m viewed as positive doesn’t that mean I’m doing something right.” Bryan loves to make others smile so being described as positive can be considered a plus for him. This year at Ripon High Bryan wants to create a positive environment for those that especially need it. A crisis is going on in the world and people aren’t okay mentally and Bryan wants to help those people, even if it's only a little bit of help. Bryan understands that this year will be drastically different but that doesn't discourage him but motivates him to be there for the people that need it most. A support system is essential for people, in the eyes of Bryan Ochoa. Even for the people that appear to have everything together they still need a person to support them and Bryan aspires to be that person. Bryan is focusing this year on his own definition of tranquility. According to Bryan Ochoa everyone has their own definition of tranquility. For Bryan Ochoa those can be the moments where everything seems perfect and you can finally breathe that breath of fresh air but, it can also be the moments where you are full of confidence and no one can stop you. Sometimes it can be the moments where you don't feel like you're the protagonist of your own story and the moments where you lie in bed listening to girl in red content with the tears you are crying. To be tranquil is to be content with oneself and that comes in many shapes and forms. Bryan has his own definition and wants others to have their own sense of what it means to have their own definition of tranquil. He aspires to be the positive person people look up to. Bryan also wants to show that despite different circumstances you can still accomplish great things.

The Role Model - Page 9
My role model would have to be one of my older brothers, Angel. He’s been there for me emotionally at the times I needed someone. He may not fully understand me but I know he’s trying and that means so much to me. He was there for me when I some sort of figure in my life and I can’t thank him enough for it. He’s a good person and hardworking. He’s incredibly funny but actually pretty introverted. Sometimes he can be smart but I’ve written a college paper for him before and can I just say I’ve never felt so good about getting an A on a paper. The man has been through a lot and has weight on his soldiers but he’s still doing his best and I admire that. (Angel is the one on the left).
The Inner Animal - Page 10
My inner animal would be a cat. Specifically a black cat. In different cultures, a black cat can have different meanings but I personally think of a black cat as a sign that something is going to happen, good or bad. I’m open to change as I have gone through it. Whether it is good or bad change is a necessity for growth and I will grow. A cat can be docile but when comfortable around someone they won’t be quiet. I personally feel that my personality has shifted to a calmer version but when I’m comfortable around people I will have loads of energy. Black cats can also be associated with the night sky and I have been nocturnal for a while. I sleep throughout the day and stay up at night and if I’m being completely honest the night sky is beautiful. The nightly hours are the most peaceful and I find that incredible. It doesn’t matter where we are or who we are, we all look at the same moon and the same sky. I also believe my inner animal would a black cat because black is an incredible color and I love to wear it, which is why most of my clothes lean towards darker colors.
The Season of Giving
- For my final I chose to do the Giving Tree. To be more specific I couldn’t do the giving tree but Jaydin Kroutil’s grandmother runs a child/family homeless shelter and they were accepting gift cards. I did this because community service would be difficult with Covid but also because I know how it feels to not get a gift on Christmas. Even if it’s just a gift cards receiving something feels amazing. I’m satisfied with my decision in doing the giving tree because there are people out there that deserve kindness a bit more.
- So first I tried to get a tag from the giving tree. After a week of not being able to get a tag because there just wasn’t any, I texted Jaydin and asked her about the details regarding here giving tree. I went to Target while in zoom class and got the card. I had to convince my brother to take me and while we were there he was with his girlfriend and I wandered around the store. I even took a picture with the Christmas trees that were there. It was a pretty fun process.
- There wasn’t really an emotional impact. I understand that people have it worse and need some extra kindness. I guess I can say that I’m happy that my gift will make someone happy in a hokey that deserves to be filled with happiness. It was also really fun going to the store and letting my energy flow. That’s also why my brother never takes me anywhere because I end up having too much energy. Besides that I do wish for the families and children to be happy on Christmas
- I think this assignment is valuable. It was a bit more difficult to do that last year but I think that makes it all the more important. Families are suffering and Christmas won’t be the usual Christmas people have. I know how this assignment will make at least someone happy and I’m looking forward to that. Sharing kindness is important and should always be a key value in people lives.
The Best Things about Me
I’m a very unique person with a unique personality. I think that personality is one of the very best things about me. I’m a positive individual who loves to help people grow and better themselves. However to do that you need to grow yourself and it’s a challenge but I still did it. I’m very outgoing and comfortable with who I am. If I am comfortable with a person I can talk with them for hours, or if I’m comfortable with a person I can be with that person doing nothing and I’d still be happy. I like seeing people smile and that makes me smile the most.
|
One of the best things about me is that I am not afraid to live my truth. I am both gay and Mexican and have embraced my identity. Of course, it was a struggle but now I am incredibly happy. I have lived lying about who I was and won’t continue to do that but I will continue to be Real. Being Real I will tell people how it is and give constructive criticism. If a person wants to improve I will tell them my most real thoughts. I am not afraid to live my truth and be Real.
|
Part of what is “Best about me” are the things I do. I’m a very active person and am always full of energy. I love to interact with people and enjoy spending my time being with others. I am my very best surrounded by others. The people around me have helped me so much and have become what’s best about me. Most of what I do is about having fun and sometimes even acting on impulse. I can’t do that during these tough times but I love to have fun. Whether that be doing sports or laying in bed listening to music, all of that has become what is best about me. Anything by Cuco is perfect to listen to in bed and just vibe. (picture pre covid)

What I like best about being a member of leadership - even during a pandemic
This year of leadership has been both a test and a way for me to grow. What I like best about being a member of leadership are the interactions we all have with each other. Leadership is a family that supports each other through tough times. Even if it is during a pandemic, those zoom calls we have together are incredible. Even if some of the freshmen think I am a senior, that’s okay because we are a loving family. Honestly, I don't know how that misconception occurred but it’s an incredible one at that. Interacting with people is the highlight of my day and interacting with the new people in the program is an enjoyable experience. I’ve struggled a lot mentally this year but because of my leadership family, I was able to open to them and have an enjoyable leadership year. This year was drastically different but that interaction with one another has helped me keep sane. With leadership, I’ve grown as a person and matured. I genuinely enjoy leadership and the leadership family.
Homecoming
My favorite part about this adapted homecoming was the fact that we were still able to do some sort of decoration. Planning and prepping decorations for the school to see is a very fin and exiting thing to do and I'm glad we were able to do it. Also the lip sync that was only a dance was fantastic. There was more creativity with the dances because people didn't have to focus their attention on getting the words right and just had fun. Loved the night rally and loved everything homecoming.
What I love to do
I love to listen to music. I always listen to music every minute of the day and even while I sleep. Music is always being played in the background and even helps me focus. Some of my favorite music artists are Charli XCX, Bad Bunny, and BROCKHAMPTON. I also love to do sports such as volleyball and wrestling. The sports motivate me to do better and improve myself as a person. I also actively enjoy playing video games. Video games have been a part of my life ever since I was a literal baby. My older brothers always played video games so I’ve always been surrounded by video games.
Letter to Parents/Guardian
Thank you so much for all you’ve done. I appreciate you greatly and for always being my support when I ever needed it. Thank you for dedicating your time to helping me whenever I needed it. I’m so happy to be your child and to have such wonderful parents. Knowing that you guys support me and all my decisions will always bring comfort to my heart. I don’t show appreciation all that much but I’m still forever grateful. Dad, thank you for the distant support you give me. I appreciate the love you give me from afar even though I don't see you all that much. Mom, thank you for always being there for me. I will always be thankful for the love you have shown.
The Letter
Dear Future Spirit Publicity Coordinator,
Apparently there's a lot of you but I hope you guys do your best together. I don’t know each and one of you but I must say that I hope you guys all the best. I know that you will all do wonderful together and that it will be a pleasure to have you in the class
As you should know a Spirit Publicity Coordinator’s job is to be spirited. To go out of their way to be the example. I advise you to get out of your comfort zone. There is no way to be a proper Spirit Coordinator without talking to new people and encouraging others to dress up. Every day I would talk to someone new and get a chance to get to know them. You are responsible for encouraging the classes to be spirited. I suggest you go all out even if your friends aren’t. You are the example. Even if you decide not to go out then wear the minimum and encourage others to wear the minimum. As Spirit Coordinator you have to take spirit counts and I trust that you all do them well and accurately. This year there Spirit Counts were different but the usual is that for every spirit day you will go class to class, count who is spirited, and give them candy. Since there are more of you than usual I trust that it will go well.
Also an honorable mention to the Pride Tribe work you will be doing. Work with Mrs. Pendleton because SuperFan absorbed Pride Tribe. Pride Tribe is basically showing support to sporting events and being spirited at said events. You guys will be responsible for raising spirit at said sports, so try and go to sporting events and if you can't ask others to go. Sports are really important at Ripon High and learn some chants while you're at it. There are also t-shirts sales we used to have but I don't think those will happen anytime soon. Pride Tribe shirts are sold in the student store now but having new shirts is possible.
I wish you all the best and remember that you can always ask others for help. Never hesitate to create bonds with other people and never hesitate to reach out to others. If you ever need help you can always ask your Leadership family.

The Professional
In the class there was a focus on Positivity. In such difficult times it was necessary to have a good mindset and not give up hope. Positivity is not a necessary factor in being a leader but it can be a good skill to have. However there is a fine line between being positive and being too positive. It’s good to be positive in the sense that you will work hard despite any setbacks, however it's not good to be positive when your actions are contradicting your words. Positivity is a mindset one must strive to achieve because with positive nature connections are formed and work can be done at an incredible pace. Positivity is like a glue that holds people together. Another skill that was focused in class was time management. As leaders you must be able to effectively manage your time and meet deadlines. The future doesn’t wait and it strikes at you fast. Time management has always been a focus and it's always better to be early than late. During Covid managing your time was even more important because you don’t always have a chance to meet up in person everyday to work. Being able to maintain a positive mindset and effectively manage your time are ideal in a leadership role.
Change
This entire year was hectic. Of course I could relax more but I really did not know what to do. All I knew was that I needed to maintain a positive mindset, because so many others were already feeling depressed. I can't change what happened however I do hope that we can learn something from this. The class needs to bond with each other. We have become disconnected and there isn't that Leadership family connection. We must connect with each other and connect with one another so we can effectively work as a leadership team. Maybe more team bonding because there was a lack of connection because of a screen. I look forward to next year and all the memories that will come.
The Ideal Leader
An Ideal Leader is one that encourages others and works with others to accomplish something even greater. An example for others and a good example that others will want to follow. Leaders are Real, they must be able to give the facts in a manner that doesn’t sugarcoat. Sugarcoating a serious issue is a flaw some leaders have, however if it's to maintain order sugarcoating can be necessary. A student in the Leadership class must be some school related activity. During class work must be done and not spent on the phone or computer. Work must be done and done in a timely manner. An Ideal Leader is someone who communicates with others and creates connections with others to do the best work possible. A leader is a person just like anyone else. A person who struggles and goes through hardships. A person who needs help just like anyone else. Anyone can be a leader, however not everyone is an ideal leader.
